Here's more info about our speakers:
Scheduled to Present Board Certified Allergist Dr. Celina Bernabe, D.O.
Celina C. Bernabe, D.O.
Dr. Bernabe is a graduate of the University
of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a
specialized four-year combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric
post-graduate medical training residency and an additional two-year
fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Kansas University
Medical Center. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of
Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Kansas University Medical Center.
Dr. Bernabe is certified by the American Board of Allergy and
Immunology, the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American
Board of Pediatrics.
School nurse, Liberty Public School District 53, Missouri Kristin M. Redmond, RN, BSN
Kristin Redmond, RN, BSN is closing her 6th year of School Nursing with the Liberty Public School District. She received her BSN from DePauw University. And has 15 years of hospital and ambulatory care nursing experience. She has recently participated in the National School Board Association Food Allergies Webinar: Keeping Students Safe and ready to Learn.
Food allergies have affected my life because as a school nurse I have a role to advocate, protect, and educate students, staff, and parents in our school community. I have been motivated to learn more and to stay engaged in the current events and policies surrounding food allergies. Most importantly, within the building where I work, I have responsibilities to the students in my building to listen, guard, keep informed, and support in every way possible.
ER Nurse Verick Burchfield Verick Burchfield is a Family Nurse Practitioner with 12 years of
Emergency Room experience. He attended The University of Alabama at
Birmingham, where he graduated in 1997 and received his nursing degree.
He then completed his Master's Degree at Samford University in the year
2000. He and his wife Crystal are the parents of four and their youngest
son has had a peanut allergy for just over a year. They have faced many
of the same challenges that all parents with children affected by this
allergy have. Verick is passionate about informing parents and others
involved with persons with peanut allergies as to the risks of allergic
reaction.
Life Flight Eagle Nurse, Joey Araiza, RN, BSN, CEN
Joey is originally from Wichita, KS, graduated from Oak Park HS 1995, and then from William Jewell College 2002, with a Bachelors of Science, Nursing. She writes; "I have been a registered nurse for 9 years. I am an experienced critical care/emergency room nurse that currently practices flight nursing. My nursing career started as a nurse technician at The Children’s Mercy Hospital in 1998. I continued to work at CMH through nursing school and then transferred to North Kansas City Hospital and began working in critical care (telemetry/ICU). I continued critical care in an intensive care unit in Burbank, CA and later moved back to Missouri where I gained ER experience at Liberty Hospital. I was a charge nurse in the ER, and gained a vast amount of knowledge about numerous patient conditions (adult and child). I currently practice as a flight nurse at LifeFlight Eagle, which I thoroughly enjoy!
I have experienced many patients with allergic reactions and severe food allergies, children and adults. The severity does not change with age. It is more difficult to identify an allergen with a child, since it is usually their first encounter with an allergen. However, food allergies seem to be on the rise, and are becoming more identifiable. I have learned the most important piece is early recognition. Some symptoms are subtle, and some are not.
AAFA of KC Speaker Heather Duncan Heather is a proud mommy of a 4 year
old and a 20 month old. Her family has been finding their "new
version of normal" and has just completed their third asthma season
since her daughter's asthma diagnosis in 2008. She's lived through
several emotional roller coaster rides from her daughter's hospitalization,
frequent E.R. visits and feeling like the difficult parent at the doctor's
office. Heather's goal is to help other families find their own "new
normal" and to help them know where to go for more information if
it ever becomes necessary to find it. In her spare time, Heather
works full-time for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and volunteers
with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America - Greater Kansas City
Chapter as well as her church. She can be reached at heather.lynn.duncan@gmail.com.

Here are some ways that you can help others and get involved
From FACST member Casey Burkitt Help Casey by filling out the following survey. He is an industrial engineering student working on the redesign of Epi pens for his senior project at the University of Kansas.
From our friends at POCSH in Indiana Our family is asking for you to help spread the word of our petition in honor of our allergic son. We are members of POCHA, a local food allergy support group in Indiana, and members of FAAN. We have 2 boys with severe food allergies. We have written an online petition that we are going to send to the Archbishop of Indianapolis requesting a change or amendment to Canon Law that requires the communion host be made of "wheat or water". I am hoping by reaching out to support groups, we can build strength by numbers. Please read or petition and pass it onto your members of your group. We know changing Canon Law will not be easy, but at least we can get the word out and get people talking about this. Thanks for helping! Melissa Knapp www.petitiononline.com/cathcomm/petition.html
FAAN'sTeen Summit
FAAN’s Fifth Annual Teen Summit, held in Baltimore, MD on October 22-24, was a huge success! Teens from 17 states came together and met other teens just like them. There were presentation topics ranging from school and bullying to traveling and dating. The teens and their parents had an opportunity to speak with an allergist, an adolescent psychiatrist, and even the hotel’s executive chef. More than anything, everyone loved seeing old friends, making new ones, and connecting with those who just “get it.” Pictures from the event can be found on our Flickr page.
