April 2010

We started off with a reminder of all the great events coming up.  We had a lively discussion of FA school issues and shared support and ideas.  The second half of the meeting, we created safety notebooks for our child's teacher.

Still looking for volunteers!  but also wanting to give a GREAT BIG THANK Your to Bev Beard, former daycare director,  for providing child care:)

March 2011

We handed out some allergen free snack samples and children's books from FAAN.  We discussed the new meeting format and events for the upcoming year.  We had a chance to talk and get to know one another and share stories.  We are looking for a volunteer for our Kids Connect group.  There is a curriculum and an assistant available for this position.  Contact me if you have a background in teaching or working with kids and are interested in details.

No child care was available for this month.  We are hopeful that next month this will be available.
Next Month: Regular Meeting & Work shop: making a safety notebook for your child's teacher & getting ready for health care symposium

GIVING THANKS

It saddens me to have to announce that due to continually declining attendance, FACST meetings will be suspended until after the New Year.  We are not throwing in the towel!  During this time we will maintain the website and keep you up to date on food allergy issues.  We will take this time to reevaluate, revamp, reorganized and recharge!  We've got some great ideas and options to share after January 1.  We give thanks to our friends and supporters.  As always, we will be happy to hear your suggestions, continue offering support, answer your questions and address your concerns @ no2nuts.kc@gmail.com

August 2010
Summary of August Meeting

News & Issues-
  • Reminder of FAAN walk on 9/25.
  • I found a wonderful Bakery in Lee's Summit catering to gluten free and allergy free baked goods called Kneaded Specialties.  The owner, Sherry McGarrah is interested in speaking, sharing her story and some samples in the future.  In the same vein, a member wrote in about her favorite nut/egg/dairy free bakery OUTLET, Roma Bakery at 210 Chauteau.  We will definitely check this out!
  • A word of warning- when you refill your auto injectors, your insurance company may substitute a new generic on the market.  This generic is designed much like the Twinject, not the Epipen.  If you have a preference speak to your doctor.  There IS a big difference in design and you do not want confusion in an emergency.  Please check with your doctor and pharmacy to see how this might effect you.
Guest Speaker-
Kathryn Collins shared a hard copy version of her power point presentation that she gives to her son's teachers each year.  It was very thorough, organized and informative.  She also shared a binder of emergency FA info that she made for his teacher to be kept in the classroom.  More info about the binder can be found in August Tips section.  She ALSO shared an allergy medication box that she made for her son- filled with an extra Epi, Benedryl, Doctors' orders, and contact information clearly labeled with her son's allergy information and picture.  Email me if you are thinking of creating your own and think you need more specific information about the presentation, binder or box. Thanks so much Kathryn!

Open Floor-

Next month we will discuss the possibility of a Fall Family Camp!  I visited a great location that has lots of potential!!!

We must have volunteers to provide child care during meetings.
This service will enable members to bring their kids to a safe, food free space and give the kids a chance to meet other FA kids.  Put the word out to grandmas, older siblings, cousins etc.

The issue of having play dates has been temporarily shelved until more interest is indicated.

As always- the call has been put out to share your product reviews, website reviews, articles, stories, and recipes!!

If you cannot make it to a meeting, feel free to email me and I will include your questions or comments for you!

July 2010
Summary of July Meeting-

Due to low attendance many topics were postponed to allow for more members to add their input.

News & Issues-
Reminders of FAAN walk on 9/25 and the Peanut Free Suite night at the Royals 7/21.

Guest Speaker-
Registered Dietitian, Michelle Arasim Diekmann, RD,LD
She addressed nutritional issues encouraging the choice of one (or few) ingredient foods, the use of fresh and/or raw foods, perimeter shopping and explaining the NuVal system.  Her hand outs will be available next meeting
.

Until attendance increases, guest speakers will be postponed.  I will continue to contact speakers, but I will delay scheduling for now.

Open Floor-
Meetings will now be held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 in the Truman Room at TMC.  Last month this change was proposed and it was decided to give a month for others to add input, protest this change or make another proposal.  There was no opposition to this change- so Wednesdays it is!

Child care was provided (a special thanks to my husband who took off work early to watch the kiddos!) but, this was a one time volunteer to get the ball rolling.  Member Jael D. will be looking for a volunteer for next month.  If anyone is interested, please drop me a line!  Along the same line, there was no interest expressed on line regarding Saturday Play Groups.  We will revisit this topic next month before putting it on the shelf.

There is now an informal lending library for members to check out materials.  If you have any food allergy related items that you would like to loan, bring them and we will add them to the catalog.

We discussed the possibility of a Family Camp weekend for next spring or fall.  Sarah A. and Jael D.  will be touring the facilities at the Rotary Youth Camp at Lake Jacomo to check it out before the next meeting to report back to the group.

Call for Volunteers-
We need volunteers to babysit kids during meetings.  This service will enable members to bring their kids to a safe, food free space and give the kids a chance to meet other FA kids.  Put the word out to grandmas, older siblings, cousins etc.

Thanks!
Sarah June 2010
Summary of June Meeting-

News & Issues-
First of all- A Special Thank you to all of you who made it to our first meeting!!!  Members came from Overland Park, Blue Springs, Independence, Lees Summit and Greenwood. I hope to meet MANY more members who might join us in the future.

Guest Speaker-
I introduced myself, the website and my "vision" for the group.  We discussed how building our membership would give us the manpower to hold special events for kids.  Possible future events could include a Food Free Halloween Party, A Winter Carnival, A Spring Sports Field Day, A Summer Splash Party.  Other future projects may include "Take a Chef to Dinner" night -a dinner meeting where parents can educate a restaurant and in turn the restaurant may gain an endorsement, and raising funds to offer food allergy training to schools.

Open Floor-
We also discussed the possibility of offering child care during meetings.  This would make meeting attendance possible for several families and would give kids the opportunity to meet other kids with allergies.  I have checked on the availability of a room will be ready for us for next month! We have a volunteer for next month.  Some ideas also included a "board game" night or a movie night.  Please see the Meetings Page for details!!!

Another kid social idea that was proposed was holding a Saturday (monthly, weekly?) play group.  We are looking for input on this idea- check the new poll.  Do we want a rotating location or a central location?  Do we want to meet weekly or monthly?  Any ideas for indoor play areas in winter?  Any volunteers for a coordinator- someone to handle posting locations and times, a member sign up and emailing reminders to members?  Contact me at the "Drop Us A Line" page.

Also, please share your thoughts about meeting day.  It has been proposed to change the meeting night to WEDNESDAYS.  That change will take effect in August if there are no objections.  Again, please add your input at the "Drop Us A Line" page.

We discussed proposed guest speakers.  School related speakers such as "school nurse" and "special education teacher" drew the most attention.  Other speakers of interest included a therapist or counselor to address such issues as family dynamics or how to deal with family members who don't "get it", siblings without food allergy, "solidarity eating",  creating future food issues (such as hoarding, food aversion or anorexia), anxiety, parenting on the same page.  I will start setting a speakers' schedule.

Call for Volunteers-
Members were asked to share flyers with their grocery stores, allergist, pediatrician, library to boost membership.  One member offered her PR experience to get FACST mentioned in the local news media!  How exciting- watch for us!  I'll let you know details in the future!!!

As always- the call has been put out to share your product reviews, website reviews, articles, stories, and recipes!!

If you cannot make it to a meeting, feel free to email me and I will include your questions or comments for you!
